I interviewed Noor through a translator who spoke her language, Malay, in Kuala Lumpur. When I asked her about what she wants for her children, she teared up. Her life and the outlook of her children’s lives has improved tremendously since she started working. She makes Raven + Lily products. Photo by Melinda DiMauro.
I have seven children who range in age from three to 14. Sewing is all about family. My father used to sew clothing and, after watching him, I decided I could do it, too. My mother-in-law and my father helped me to learn to sew. I used to work in a fabric store and measure fabric; I have always loved design. With this job, I have gained more skills and can now make products other than clothing. Our products are very good and we try our best to make a really good quality that you will appreciate.
Since working here, it’s made a big difference in my life. Because I have seven children, it’s not enough if just my husband works. I have a responsibility to help. If we depended on just my husband’s income, we wouldn’t make it. My job has really helped my life because now I can even buy myself things. Before, our finances were very restricted, and now I have more freedom and abilities. God willing, I want my children to be successful. God willing, my life will continue to be better.
